Mark Smith, a renowned expert in medals and militaria, has been a celebrated figure on BBC TV’s Antiques Roadshow since 2014. Known for his captivating storytelling and encyclopedic knowledge, he has become one of the show’s most popular experts. Beyond Antiques Roadshow, Mark has appeared on numerous television programs including Deep Wreck Mysteries, Who Do You Think You Are?, Bargain Hunt, The One Show, and BBC Breakfast, earning recognition as a trusted and engaging authority on military history.
Acknowledged globally as a leading authority on the Victoria Cross, Mark has authored five books on the Great War and contributed to many publications and magazines. A member of both the Western Front Association and the Orders and Medals Research Society, he continues to advance research in military history and medal studies. His live presentation, For Valour: The Story of the Victoria Cross, delves into the origins, myths, and extraordinary stories surrounding Britain’s highest military honour. Mark’s fascination with militaria began in 1983, when he started dealing in historical artefacts in Islington, London. Over the years, he has built an extensive private collection, specialising in the Victoria Cross, flying clothing, and RAF logbooks.
